Why Rodeo Athletes Keep Getting Hurt: It's Not What You Think

Champion Living Fitness — Blog

A few years ago, I had an athlete sit across from me after tearing something for the third time in two seasons.

Same story I hear all the time.

“I train hard.”
“I’m tough.”
“I don’t skip workouts.”
“I don’t understand why this keeps happening.”

He thought he was injury-prone.

He wasn’t.

He was underprepared.

Demand vs. Capacity

As a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist, I don’t look at injuries as bad luck.

I look at demand versus capacity.

Rodeo places extreme demands on the body:

  • Rotational torque at high speed

  • Violent eccentric loading when you dismount or get pulled out of position

  • Massive bracing through unstable, asymmetrical positions

  • Rapid force production followed immediately by force absorption

Now here’s the real problem:

Most athletes train effort.
They don’t train preparation.

What Was Actually Missing

What I saw in that athlete — and what I see over and over — wasn’t a toughness issue.

It was this:

  • Weak rotational core control under speed

  • Poor eccentric strength to decelerate force

  • No progressive overload building true tissue capacity

  • Hips and adductors unprepared for asymmetrical load

  • Shoulders strong in the gym, unstable in real positions

You can’t just “ride into shape.”

Riding develops skill.
It does not systematically build durability.

How Durability Is Actually Built

Durability is built intentionally.

  • Through progressive overload

  • Through eccentric development

  • Through anti-rotation before explosive rotation

  • Through strengthening weak ranges instead of avoiding them

When we rebuilt that athlete’s program, we didn’t add more intensity.

We added structure.

We trained his ability to absorb force before producing it.
We built rotational control before chasing power.
We progressively overloaded tissues so his body could tolerate the violence of the sport.

The Result

The following season?

No recurring injury.
Improved performance.
More confidence.

Why We Built Champion Living Fitness

That’s why we built Champion Living Fitness.

It’s not bodybuilding.
Not generic CrossFit.
Not random “cowboy workouts.”

These are rodeo-specific strength systems designed around how this sport actually stresses the human body.
